Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Mediatek Helio X10 vs Note 3 Pro Snapdragon 650 Benchmarks

As I am currently in possession of a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (3GB/32GB/Helio X10) and a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro (3GB/32GB/Snapdragon 650) I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to compare these SoCs in a common hardware platform.

The specifications of the SoCs, as clocked in the Xiaomi devices, are as follows:

PowerVR G6200 @ 700Mhz

Qualcomm Snapdragon 650
2 x ARM A72 @ 1.8Ghz
4 x ARM A53 @ 1.4Ghz
Adreno 510 @ 600Mhz

Both SoCs are great mid range offerings, with the Snapdragon 650 being pretty close to last years flagships - in particular the Snapdragon 808, with its 2xA57 + 4xA53 cores. The A57 is, of course, an inferior core to the A72 in the Snapdragon 650, but it runs at a slightly higher 2Ghz in the 808.

Mediateks X10 is pretty similar to Qualcomms Snapdragon 625, which also features 8 x 2Ghz A53 cores, albeit with the Adreno 506 rather than the PowerVR GPU). The 625 is positioned one rung behind the 650 in Qualcomms current lineup (615, 616, 617, 625, 650 and 652), so it will be interesting to see how close they are in terms of performance.

General Methodology

The results here are from two separate passes of the benchmarks over two days. There were no major discrepancies between the results, but I have taken an approximate, rounded average.

Here the Snapdragon is about 50% faster across all scores.

The big A72 in the Snapdragon 650 holds a major advantage here in single threaded performance, being almost twice as fast.

In the multi-threaded test, the X10 wins by a noticeable 30%. The significant clock speed difference in the A53 cores (1.4Ghz vs 2Ghz) and the fact there are two additional cores in the X10 outweighs the power of the A72 cores in this pure multi-threaded situation.

3D Mark puts heavy emphasis on the GPU and therefore the Adreno 510 in the Snapdragon 650 wins by around 70%.

Conclusion

For the vast majority of situations, the Snapdragon 650 offers a significant performance boost over the Helio X10.
